Our Mission

Celebrating the Avian Diversity of Northern Michigan

Nestled in the heart of nature, our sanctuary is located just minutes from the shores of Lake Michigan. This special location serves as a haven for migrating birds, local nesters, and year-round residents alike.

Our mission is to educate and foster a deep appreciation for the diverse avian life that calls this region home. From the first warblers of spring to the last flocks of fall, we’re here to share the wonder happening in our corner of the world.

How it all started-A Journey Through Binoculars

Our name, Birding with Binocs, was inspired by our early experiences observing birds through binoculars. We quickly discovered a remarkable range of species passing through our area, and capturing their beauty and behavior fascinated us.

We also realized something important — you don’t need fancy equipment. Just a good pair of binoculars will do! This excitement led us to share our discoveries and build a community of bird enthusiasts who appreciate Northern Michigan’s avian wildlife.

A Sanctuary of Seasonal Bird Migrations

Every fall and spring, large flocks of birds gather at our sanctuary. They rest briefly, their calls echoing at dusk as they assemble to continue their journey. The waves of diverse species reveal the rich biodiversity thriving in our area.

“Over 350 bird species have been documented in Northern Michigan — making it one of the richest birding regions in the Midwest.”
